Ride your Life

Ride your Life” is the metaphor I have chosen to describe the attitude I use to deal with life and business events and the attitude that I want to share with people and organizations. It is extremely effective because it is closely connected to our human nature.

The difference between “riding a horse” and just being “seated on a horse” is very deep and those who tried the second one they know it can be very scary and dangerous. When you are seated on a horse you realize that you have no control when you want to go in one direction and the horse doesn’t listen to you or you want to stop but there is no way because the horse goes on galloping and turning wherever it likes. In this case you are at the mercy of events.

But when you

- learn the patterns that rule this relationship,

- recognize how to deal with your horse’s reins,

- learn how to use your body by changing the way you use your weight,

not only do the results change, everything changes. You become able to move it into the direction you choose, you can change your speed, you can walk, can trot or gallop, and at the same time you can enjoy the feeling of air in your face. You can hear the sound of the horse hooves creating a nice harmony and you can clearly see that you are leading.

This attitude consists of more than just taking the reins of your situation, it means doing it with awareness. Awareness includes the dynamics, which kind of horse you are riding, what kind of rider you are, what kind of ride you want to play, where you want to go, with whom, which is the best trail, what are your resources, and what obstacles you can find by the road, … all this having and also having an effective strategy to manage all the things you can not foresee.

In the word “ride” you can already find some of the main principles that constitute this attitude:

R = Responsibility and Results, meaning “Yes, you can!”. Your Responsibility is the sum total of all the things that depend on you in a specific situation. When you have no responsibilities, you have a problem because there is nothing you can do. Your responsibility is the area in which you can change things.

When you recognize your responsibility you recognize your power. Results are what matter, the product of your actions. It is fundamental that you learn at first to recognize which results are really important for you and then you learn how to produce those results in your life or in your business.

I = Identity and Independence. Everything starts from your Identity. When you gain complete awareness of your deep self, who you are and why you are here, every single thing changes. The meaning of events is different, words sound in a different way and you see the world with new “well focused” eyes. This is the first step to move toward your Independence, being completely self-sufficient and able to create your outcomes. That means getting your freedom, both “free from …” and also “free to …”.

D = Decision and Determination. Get used to the fact that you make Decisions continuously, even when you delay a decision, you have just made one. Making decisions aligned with your Identity and Purpose empowers the quality of your actions and consequently the results you get. Think about these three questions: 1) Where do you put your focus? 2) What meaning do you give to the events? 3) Which actions do you choose to do? Just these three decisions define the quality of your life. Another fundamental element is Determination, this word comes directly from ancient Latin and denotes the ability to accomplish things and take your tasks to the end - a must. When you use this capability that means you have chosen the path of success and are cutting away all the other paths.

E = Enjoy and EnergyEnjoyment is the way we want to spend most of our time, the way we want to do things. The fuel of enjoyment powers every kind of engine. Just think, how do you act when enjoying? How would your life and job change if enjoying would have a constant presence inside of you?

For every activity we play we also need the right level of Energy to accomplish it. Find the way to get all the energy you need whenever you require it.

Here you can see some of the analogies between riding and living and even if you’re not a horse rider, you will understand why riding is an extraordinary way to get information and strategies for every area of our lives

In Riding:

... When you want to go somewhere, you have to look and focus on that point.

... At any moment, unexpected things can happen, you have to manage them.

... If you don't lead it, it will lead you.

... Successful people are those who trained themselves to get what they want from riding.

... The more skills you have, the more you will enjoy your riding.

... What you send out, is what you get back.

... The more connected you are with your true self, the better your ride will be.

... The emotions you feel are the emotions that characterize your riding.

Now look how it works exchanging “riding” with “Life”

In Life:

... When you want to go somewhere, you have to look and focus on that point.

... At any moment, unexpected things can happen, you have to manage them.

... If you don't lead it, it will lead you.

... Successful people are those who trained themselves to get what they want from life.

... The more skills you have, the more you will enjoy your life.

... What you send out, is what you get back.

... The more connected you are with your true self, the better your life will be.

... The emotions you feel are the emotions that characterize your life.

And you can also exchange the word Life with Business, Sports, Relationships or whatever you like and you will notice how it always works.

I use this attitude (Ride your Life) in my coaching, when I coach in the traditional way, as if my client would be a rider dealing with a “problem horse”.

I also use horses in outdoor coaching, which uses a lot of creativity, creating deep connection with my clients, who reach a deep level of awareness about themselves and their patterns. Coaching with horses is played on the ground, we never mount horses. In the future I will also have a course for advanced riders that will take place on the horses.

Periodically I offer coaching at a prestigious ranch in Arizona where I mix coaching activities with ranch activities. Taking advantage of special packages of one week, my clients can follow a path of personal growth custom made on their interest and priorities, so that in the meantime they can learn to ride (or improve their riding if they’re already able to), to rope, to engage in barrel racing, team penning and many other ranch activities both on the ground and on the saddle, supported by real cowboys in the old US western style. All these activities played in this extraordinary and unique background away from usual patterns and conditioning, facilitate a deep self-connection and allow people unleash and express their potential. Everything is also connected with the issues clients want to work on in coaching so at the same time there are many levels of learning.

The Ride your Life methodology has been published in an article by Choice, the most prestigeous magazine of professional coaching in the USA.
